On the afternoon of August 17th, 1966, two amateur electronics technicians named Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana left their homes in Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, and told their families they were going shopping for spare parts. They boarded a bus for the city of Niterói, across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, and were never seen alive again. Three days later, on August 20th, a boy flying a kite on the steep, brush-choked slope of Morro do Vintém stumbled onto their bodies — laid out side by side, dressed in suits and raincoats, faces covered by two crude masks of hammered lead.
Beside the bodies, investigators found an empty water bottle, two damp towels, and a small spiral notebook containing a set of instructions that read like a countdown to something neither man survived: a time to arrive, a time to swallow capsules, and an order to "protect metals" and wait for a signal. No struggle. No visible wounds. No confirmed cause of death — because by the time anyone performed an autopsy, the Brazilian summer heat had already taken the evidence with it.
