Harvey Barnes sealed victory for Newcastle United at St. James' Park against Brighton & Hove Albion after William Osula and Dan Burn had set them on their way.

The Magpies' 23rd victory of the season in all competitions was a first in six games and Eddie Howe's side had to fight until the last kick at St. James' Park against one of the league's form teams.

Nick Pope made an important save from Jack Hinshelwood inside the first two minutes - then Carlos Baleba's long range curler struck the top of the Leazes End crossbar as Brighton made the stronger start.

But the home side came close themselves in the 11th minute when Osula drifted in from the left and fired just wide.

Seconds later, Jacob Murphy beat Bart Verbruggen to a Bruno Guimarães ball over the top. The Brighton keeper raced from his goal to make a clumsy challenge outside his area but Murphy quickly regained his footing and crossed for Osula to head into the unguarded net for a third goal in his last four matches.

And the Magpies doubled their head in the 24th minute when Burn marked his 150th Premier League appearance by heading home Guimarães' left-wing corner against his former club.

Soon afterwards, a Pope clearance ricocheted off Hinshelwood and against a post but at the other end, good combination between Osula and Willock saw the latter's poked effort kept out by Verbruggen.

It could have been 3-0 when Sven Botman headed Lewis Miley's ball back across goal for Malick Thiaw, but Verbruggen denied the German defender from close range.

A Danny Welbeck header dropped over the bar for the visitors but United had a commanding lead at the break, with Osula shooting wide in stoppage time after a lovely turn and strong run from his own half.

Osula continued to pose a threat for Albion after the break and he was the target when Guimarães raced onto Joe Willock's flick and hit a first-time low cross from the right. Jan Paul van Hecke intercepted, but Verbruggen had to adjust quickly to keep the ball out.

Pope showed similarly impressive reactions to parry a close-range effort from Kaoru Mitoma, although the ball appeared to come off the Japan international's arm. Next, Hinshelwood was off target with a header, then Willock drove wide at the other end.

But - after Yankuba Minteh had lofted wide - Hinshelwood pulled one back. After a sustained spell of Seagulls possession, the England under-21 man drifted into the box, controlled Welbeck's pass and finished superbly.

Newcastle have dropped too many points from winning positions this season but they did just enough to hold on here thanks to Pope's late save from Charalampos Kostoulas' bicycle kick.

Former Magpie Minteh could and should have levelled in the dying seconds when he was presented with a golden opportunity but blazed over from six yards out, and there was still time for Yoane Wissa to shoot off target from Lewis Hall's low centre, and Joelinton to drag wide deep into stoppage time.

But then Wissa teed up Barnes to smash home with virtually the last kick to seal the victory.

Newcastle United Women fell to their fourth WSL2 defeat of the season, with Jessie Gale scoring a 99th-minute winner for Bristol City Women.

United took the lead early on when Beth Lumsden found the top corner after some nice edge of the area play from Jordan Nobbs, but were pegged back on the stroke of half time by Rio Hardy.

Then, after the Lasses failed to clear a corner, Gale pounced on a bouncing ball in the six-yard box to score with one of the final touches of the game.

With the backing of a strong away contingent, United came flying out of the blocks to put in a solid performance for their fans and could have been ahead inside five minutes.

A long ball down the wing released Emily Murphy, who drove into the box before cutting the ball back to Nobbs, although the pass was slightly behind the number four, and her effort lacked conviction and fell into the arms of Lauren Brzykcy.

However, the Lasses maintained their high intensity and level of performance into the 19th minute when Lumsden scored her fifth league goal of the campaign.

A lofted Freya Gregory cross was only cleared to Nobbs on the edge of the area, and her calm first touch took Sophie Ingle out of the game and set up Lumsden to arrow her strike into the top corner.

A two-minute spell almost saw Newcastle add a second before the break. Firstly, Murphy received the ball on the half turn before seeing her outside of the box strike take a wicked deflection and dip over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Gregory played it short to Nobbs, who gave it back to the Scotland international. She aimed for the bottom corner but it rippled the side netting.

Despite the Lasses playing on the front foot and looking the more dangerous side, an Ella Powell long ball in behind Jemma Purfield saw Hardy bear down on goal before calmly finishing beyond Anna Tamminen from close range.

The blow of conceding just before half time didn't appear to knock Tanta Oxtoby's side as Lumsden was slipped through one-on-one with a perfectly weighted ball from Nobbs, but the number 26 could only lift her effort over both the keeper and the crossbar.

United were continuing to find joy through the connection of Nobbs and Lumsden, with the former releasing the winger away again to bear down on goal, although this time she was forced to shoot off balance due to the recovery run from Gemma Lawley, making it a simple save for Brzykcy.

It was all Newcastle in the second half, and they were millimetres away from retaking the lead after a hacked clearance from Bristol City saw the ball fall to Lumsden, who looked to have scored, but after a save from Brzykcy, the ball spun on the line, refusing to go over.

The Robins almost hit United with another sucker punch when they swiftly counter-attacked after a wasted Newcastle free-kick that ended up with Lexi-Lloyd Smith being played in one-on-one against an on-rushing Tamminen, but it was the Finn who came out on top with a brave low save.

Bristol City were becoming increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack as they worked a three-on-one situation with Lloyd Smith picking out Emily Syme in the six-yard box, but she was denied from close-range by Tamminen, before a last-ditch Jorja Fox tackle stopped Maria Farrugia from putting her side ahead on the rebound.

Ashton Gate was ready to celebrate an added-time winner for the home side with Lloyd Smith delivering a perfect cross to the back post for an unmarked Gale to head into an empty net, but from a couple of yards out, the on-loan Arsenal forward headed wide.

Substitute Gale was the hero for Bristol deep into stoppage time, though, with her close-range finish sending the home fans wild after United were unable to deal with a bouncing ball in the box.

Arsenal regained their place at the top of the Premier League as Eberechi Eze's first-half strike was enough for the Gunners to beat Newcastle in a hard-fought match at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's side had dropped to second place for the first time since October after Manchester City's win against Burnley in midweek had seen them go top of the table on goal difference.

Arsenal started the game well and took the lead in the ninth minute through Eze after a well-worked short corner.

The England international was passed the ball on the edge of the box by Kai Havertz and curled an excellent strike into the top corner.

Newcastle had chances of their own through William Osula, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali but could not find a way to score in the first half.

Eddie Howe introduced Yoanne Wissa and Harvey Barnes after the break as the away side chased an equaliser.

And Wissa missed a golden opportunity late on to level the match as Newcastle were defeated for the fourth league match in a row.

The win moves Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League having played a game more than title-rivals Manchester City.

The only negative of the day for the Gunners was that both Havertz and Eze had to be substituted with injury.

Adrien Truffert fired home a late winner to extend Bournemouth's impressive unbeaten run on another damaging afternoon for Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe.

The visitors, who are now undefeated in the Premier League in a club record 13 games, looked determined to give manager Andoni Iraola a fitting send-off by finishing the campaign strongly after the Spaniard announced this week he would be leaving at the end of the season.

Although Newcastle forward William Osula cancelled out Marcus Tavernier's opener midway through the second half, there was still time for another twist at St James' Park.

Tavernier turned provider as he sent in a cross and Evanilson headed it down for the unmarked Truffert to fire into the roof of the net to send Iraola darting down the touchline as his side moved up to eighth place.

It was a familiar story for Howe against his former club after Newcastle threw away another result late on.

Howe said his fire was burning "very strongly" on the eve of this game, as his future comes under increased scrutiny, but it was Bournemouth who seized the initiative.

The visitors opened the scoring when Rayan skipped away from Lewis Hall down the right and cut the ball back across to Tavernier, who bundled home from close range.

There were a smattering of boos at half-time from the home support, but Newcastle responded in the second half.

Evanilson inadvertently played Osula in after hooking the ball forward while attempting to win it from substitute Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the park.

Osula raced through, sorted out his feet under pressure from Marcos Senesi and slotted the ball past Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Although the goal was initially disallowed for offside by referee Tom Bramall, the decision was reversed to loud cheers from the home support following a check by the video assistant referee.

But there was still time for Truffert to score a dramatic winner to leave Newcastle in 14th place.

Substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a dramatic late double as Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Newcastle United.

The visitors looked to be on course for a much-needed victory following William Osula's first-half strike at Selhurst Park.

But Newcastle have thrown away more points from winning positions (25) than any other side in the Premier League and Crystal Palace came roaring back late on.

Newcastle breathed a sigh of relief after Jefferson Lerma's header crashed off the crossbar, but the hosts eventually equalised in the 80th minute.

Daniel Munoz broke forward down the right and the defender's cross was coolly hooked back across by Tyrick Mitchell to Mateta, who headed the ball down and into the net to leave manager Oliver Glasner jumping for joy on the touchline.

Opposite number Eddie Howe, by contrast, bowed his head, but the Newcastle head coach's afternoon was about to get even worse.

Referee Andy Madley awarded Crystal Palace a penalty in the first minute of stoppage time when defender Sven Botman pulled Jefferson Lerma's shirt inside the box.

Up stepped Mateta, who picked out the bottom right corner to the delight of the home supporters.

The hosts' win meant they leapfrogged Newcastle into 13th place, as Howe's team fell to 14th.

Brian Brobbey scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Sunderland came from behind to beat Newcastle United in a thrilling Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park.

Newcastle had been on target for their first home victory in this fixture since 2010 when Anthony Gordon gave the hosts a ninth-minute lead.

Sunderland played out from the back but defender Luke O'Nien's pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade and he gave it to Gordon, who did the rest to score his 17th goal of the season.

The hosts almost made it 2-0 just before the break, but Sven Botman headed against the post following a cross from left-back Lewis Hall, one of five Newcastle players to be included in Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad.

The match was paused early in the second half by referee Anthony Taylor because of reports of discriminatory abuse from the crowd towards Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida.

After a three-minute delay in which Taylor spoke to both sets of coaching staff, Geertruida and Granit Xhaka, the visitors equalised in the 57th minute.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, another called up by Tuchel, did not get great distance on a punch, the ball was played back into the box, Brobbey chested it goalwards and Dan Burn cleared off the line, only for Chemsdine Talbi to fire in the rebound.

Noah Sadiki had a chance to put Sunderland ahead, only for him to shoot at Ramsdale.

Yet it did not prove costly as Brobbey scored the late winner, to the delight of the away fans, when he converted a rebound from close range after Ramsdale saved his first attempt.

The result gives Sunderland their first league double over Newcastle since 2014-15.

Newcastle United delivered a blow to Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League as Anthony Gordon's first-half goal clinched a rare away win at Stamford Bridge.

Gordon slid in the 18th‑minute winner in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel before the Blues were booed off at full-time, losing at home to the Magpies for the first time since 2012.

Chelsea had started on top, missing a free header through Wesley Fofana before creating further chances for Alejandro Garnacho, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.

But Gordon opened the scoring by slotting in from close range after Joe Willock broke Chelsea's offside trap when running on to Tino Livramento's pass.

After the goal, the video assistant referee (VAR) waved away a penalty appeal after checking whether Reece James had pulled down Malick Thiaw, but Chelsea threatened again through Palmer, whose shot was saved.

Having made a goalkeeping change for the fourth time in five matches, the newly recalled Rob Sanchez produced an excellent save to deny Jacob Ramsey just before half-time.

Despite trailing at the break, Blues boss Liam Rosenior was proactive, bringing on striker Liam Delap for defender Malo Gusto.

The substitute immediately tested Aaron Ramsdale with a shot from the edge of the box, with Garnacho later having a shot blocked by Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Referee Paul Tierney, who had been caught in Chelsea's pre-match centre-circle huddle, waved away a penalty shout when Nick Woltemade made contact with Palmer's foot inside the box.

Gordon had another curling effort saved in the 69th minute, with Delap later shooting over on his weaker left foot, flicking a header wide and Trevoh Chalobah heading wide from a corner.

Captain Reece James, who signed a new six-year contract on Friday, struck a free-kick against the post in stoppage time, before Joao Pedro looped a header on to the roof of the net with almost the final kick of the match.

The Blues were booed off having now lost back-to-back matches at home and in Europe.

Newcastle move up to ninth in the Premier League, while Chelsea remain fifth, having played a game more than Liverpool, who host Tottenham on Sunday.

Omar Marmoush haunted Newcastle United once again as Manchester City came from behind to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had described the prospect of going to a febrile St James' Park as a "nightmare", and it certainly felt like one for the visitors after Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle in front.

But much-changed Manchester City showed their powers of recovery to respond through Savinho and a fine double from Marmoush, who has now scored seven goals against Newcastle in just six games.

Having knocked holders Newcastle out of the Carabao Cup last month, Manchester City have ended Eddie Howe's side's dream of returning to Wembley through the FA Cup.

But it was Newcastle who started this fifth-round tie with real intent and Nick Woltemade saw a header cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez before the hosts found a way through.

Barnes beat the offside trap to latch on to Sandro Tonali's through ball before taking a touch inside on to his favoured right foot and unleashing a clinical curling effort into the far corner to take the roof off the stadium.

The goal merely awakened Manchester City, though, as the visitors pinned Newcastle back and Guardiola's team drew level following a sustained period of pressure.

Jeremy Doku's drilled cross from the left went all the way through to the unmarked Savinho at the back post, and the ball ended up striking the knee of the Manchester City forward and bobbling over the line.

Stunned Newcastle sorely needed to regroup at half-time, but Manchester City merely picked up from where they left off after the break and took the lead in familiar fashion.

This time Matheus Nunes cut the ball across from the right and there was Marmoush at the far post to lash home after taking a cool touch.

Marmoush grabbed another just a few minutes later after unleashing a rocket from just outside the box, which left Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with no chance.

Manchester City, in the process, reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for an eighth successive season.
