Lewis Miley scored a dramatic late winner as holders Newcastle United beat Fulham to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. The quarter-final looked to be heading for penalties after Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic's header cancelled out Yoane Wissa's opener at St James' Park. But Miley headed home at the near post from Sandro Tonali's stoppage-time corner as Newcastle got back to winning ways following a damaging derby defeat against Sunderland on Sunday.

The 19-year-old midfielder stepped up when Newcastle needed him most, having selflessly filled in at right-back because of injuries to Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento, who hobbled off on Wednesday night. Miley, in the process, gave Eddie Howe a crucial and much-needed victory on a night supporters repeatedly sang the name of the head coach. The youngster was one of five players who kept his place from the weekend as Howe made six changes to his side.

Wissa was one of those who came into the team and he quickly made an impression on his first start since recovering from a knee injury and, indeed, since completing his protracted £55m move from Brentford in the summer.

Although Benjamin Lecomte got a hand to Jacob Murphy's first-time cross, the Fulham goalkeeper merely knocked the ball into the path of Wissa, who bundled it into the net from close range. However, shaky Newcastle were not ahead for long as Antonee Robinson ghosted into space between Murphy and Miley out wide and picked out the unmarked Sasa Lukic, who powered a header past Aaron Ramsdale.

Lecomte later punched away a swerving effort from Bruno Guimaraes and was kept busy, getting down to parry a low drive from Harvey Barnes and making a fine late save to claw away Miley's shot. But Miley rose to head home from the corner that followed to send Newcastle into a third EFL Cup semi-final in four seasons.

Nick Woltemade put through his own net as Sunderland enjoyed a derby win to remember against arch-rivals Newcastle United. These North East neighbours renewed hostilities for the first time in nearly a decade in the Premier League on Sunday, and it was Woltemade who made a decisive contribution - but not in the way the German forward would have imagined.

The second half had not long got under way when Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele whipped a teasing cross into the box and Woltemade attempted to head the ball behind. But the club's record signing ended up directing the ball in off the crossbar and into the net to send the Stadium of Light into raptures.

It felt like the roof was about to come off the stadium on an emotional afternoon for the hosts - just a day after club legend Gary Rowell died at the age of 68 following a long battle with leukaemia. Rowell cemented his place in the hearts of Sunderland fans by scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle in 1979, and Regis le Bris' fearless side built on the club's strong record against their bitter rivals.

The tone was set by Sunderland supporters unfurling a huge tifo before a ball was even kicked, which depicted a black cat hunting down a magpie in a nod to the clubs' respective nicknames. And Sunderland fed off the noise of a febrile Stadium of Light from the off as forward Bertrand Traore crashed into Lewis Hall from kick-off.

The remarkably frenetic nature of the game did not subside but both teams lacked composure and creativity in front of goal, particularly in the first half, with captain Granit Xhaka firing over from outside the box and defender Dan Ballard also sending a header off target.

But Sunderland landed what proved to be a decisive blow after the break when Woltemade scored just the second ever Premier League own goal in the Tyne-Wear derby. The hosts went close to doubling their advantage late on, but Aaron Ramsdale made a big save to keep out substitute Wilson Isidor's stinging volley. Sunderland saw the game out to move up to seventh - five places above Newcastle.

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes scored straight from a corner as 10-man Burnley's struggles continued at St James' Park. Guimaraes' moment of inspiration and a penalty from Anthony Gordon inflicted a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat on Burnley, who had defender Lucas Pires sent off in the first half.

Burnley substitute Zian Flemming pulled one back from the spot in second-half stoppage time, after Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey handled the ball, but it came too late for Scott Parker's side.

The Clarets made a fearless start but fell behind when Guimaraes stepped up on home soil once again. With Burnley no doubt expecting Guimaraes to target a team-mate from Newcastle's first corner of the afternoon, the midfielder instead whipped the ball past former team-mate Martin Dubravka and into the far corner.

Guimaraes become the first Newcastle player to find the back of the net directly from a corner in a Premier League game. Burnley crumbled and defender Pires was sent off just a few minutes later after taking down Anthony Elanga outside the area as the Swede raced through on goal following Gordon's defence-splitting pass.

Newcastle quickly made the most of the man advantage, earning a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time when Burnley midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu handled. Although referee Stuart Attwell did not give a penalty initially, the official was sent to the pitchside monitor for a second look by the video assistant referee and ruled that Ugochukwu's arms were in an "unnatural position". Up stepped Gordon, who sent Dubravka the wrong way to score his second penalty in as many games.

Newcastle pushed for a third after the break - forward Yoane Wissa made his debut for the club as a substitute after recovering from a knee injury - but Dubravka made smart saves to deny Guimaraes and prevent centre-back Maxime Esteve turning the ball into his own net.

Flemming made Newcastle sweat after scoring a penalty following another VAR intervention. But Newcastle - not without a scare - saw the game out to move up to 10th place, at least temporarily, while Burnley remain four points from safety.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe enjoyed a 48th birthday to remember as his side ended their long wait for an away win in style against Everton. The travel-sick visitors had failed to win on the road in the Premier League since April. But aggressive Newcastle started as they meant to go on at the Hill Dickinson Stadium by scoring the quickest goal of the season so far in the top flight.

Defender Malick Thiaw jumped ahead of Michael Keane to power a header past Jordan Pickford and net his first goal for the club from Lewis Miley's in-swinging corner. Though Everton rallied, initially, after going behind after just 55 seconds, the hosts only had themselves to blame for Newcastle's second goal. Not only did Everton defenders fail to clear their lines following some pinball inside the box, Pickford failed to keep out Miley's effort despite it being hit straight at him. David Moyes, unlike a beaming Howe, looked understandably furious on the touchline, but the Everton manager's evening got even worse before half-time when Nick Woltemade added a third. Tino Livramento clipped the ball down the line and Anthony Elanga hooked it across to the unmarked German, who nonchalantly lobbed Pickford from inside the area to score his seventh goal of the season.

Newcastle grabbed a fourth before the hour mark when Lewis Hall's teasing cross was headed in by Thiaw at the back post. There was still time for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to pull one back for Everton after the midfielder brilliantly controlled James Tarkowski's ball over the line before slotting past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. But it was always going to be a mere consolation as Newcastle leapfrogged Everton in the table and moved up to 11th place.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rolled back the years as the veteran Marseille forward scored a quickfire double to stun Newcastle United in the Champions League.

The English side's struggles away from home continued as their hosts came from behind thanks to two goals from the 36-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea frontman at a febrile Stade Velodrome. The in-form Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the dream start after opening the scoring with a clinical sixth-minute finish from inside the box. That followed a brilliant headed clearance off the line from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to deny Magpies defender Malick Thiaw. But the visitors - who have won just once on their travels this season - dropped off and allowed Marseille to dominate possession and create a number of opportunities for Aubameyang.

Although he spurned a series of openings in the first half, the Gabon international looked more like his old self after the break. The second half had only just got under way when 17-year-old Darryl Bakola played a through-ball into the right-hand channel behind Newcastle's defence. Nick Pope, sensing Aubameyang was racing on to it, rushed off his line in an attempt to get there first, but the Newcastle goalkeeper was caught in no man's land as the forward finished superbly from a tight angle out on the right-hand side. Marseille made it two goals in four minutes when Timothy Weah darted past Tino Livramento down the right and picked out Aubameyang, who got ahead of Fabian Schar to hook the ball home at the near post. The goal sent the French side's manager Roberto de Zerbi dancing down the touchline in delight.

And the former Brighton boss was punching the air at full-time as Marseille claimed their second Champions League win of the season to move up to 19th place in the standings, while Newcastle are eighth.

Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle United to a memorable victory against Manchester City in a rip-roaring Premier League contest. Barnes, who also opened the scoring, prodded home from inside the box to secure all three points at a raucous St James' Park. Ruben Dias earlier equalised for the visitors when his effort took a deflection off Fabian Schar after Newcastle failed to clear their lines from a corner.

But Newcastle showed their own powers of recovery to retake the lead a few minutes later. Jacob Murphy swung the ball into the box and, although Bruno Guimaraes' header cannoned off the bar, Barnes was in the right place to hook the ball into the net. There was a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check for offside, but the goal stood to send St James' into raptures once more.

It was just the response head coach Eddie Howe wanted as his side bounced back following a bruising 3-1 defeat at Brentford before the international break to claim a rare win against Pep Guardiola's team. The hosts eventually found a way past towering City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who earlier made three big saves to deny Nick Woltemade.

City, however, will rue a missed opportunity after they had the chance to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to a point. Guardiola's side were not happy that Newcastle's winner stood and they were also furious in the first half after they had a huge penalty appeal waved away when Phil Foden went down under a challenge from Schar. But, like Newcastle, they still had their chances to take control of the contest, with Erling Haaland denied after Nick Pope stood tall to block his first-time effort following Nico O'Reilly's pullback.

Haaland, whose wait to become the fastest player to 100 Premier League goals goes on a little longer, saw an attempted chip bounce harmlessly wide after Jeremy Doku played him through in the opening stages, while Foden failed to find the target from close range after exchanging a neat one-two with Rayan Cherki. But this was to be Newcastle's evening as Howe secured his first Premier League win against City.

Newcastle United Women claimed derby bragging rights with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland Women at St James’ Park.

The Tyne-Wear clash came alive in the second half after a goalless opening period, with Deanna Cooper breaking the deadlock before substitute Emily Murphy struck twice to seal the win. Sunderland briefly threatened a comeback when Kiera Barry pulled one back, but it wasn’t enough to halt Newcastle’s momentum. The match also saw a pivotal moment early on when Anna Tamminen saved Eleanor Dale’s penalty, keeping the Magpies level before their surge. In front of a lively crowd of 18,972, Newcastle extended their unbeaten run under interim boss Claire Ditchburn and climbed to fourth in the Women’s Super League 2 table, while Sunderland’s struggles continued as they fell to their eighth game without a win.

gor Thiago scored a late double as Brentford came from behind to defeat Newcastle United and extend the visitors' miserable Premier League record on the road. Harvey Barnes had put Newcastle ahead in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium after lashing the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the box. But Brentford came roaring back after the break and the hosts drew level through Kevin Schade's header after Sven Botman could only flick Michael Kayode's long throw across the box to the forward, who nodded home.

It was Brentford, rather than Newcastle, who pushed for a winner and the hosts were awarded a spot-kick by referee Stuart Attwell when Dan Burn took down Dango Ouattara inside the box. Burn, who was relieved to avoid punishment after fouling Ouattara inside the box only a few minutes earlier, was sent off after being shown a second yellow card. It fell to substitute Aaron Ramsdale, on his first league appearance for Newcastle, to try to save Thiago's penalty after a groggy Pope went off following an awkward landing. But the goalkeeper's first act of the afternoon was to pick the ball out of the net after Thiago coolly sent him the wrong way from the spot.

There was still time for Thiago to add another after Malick Thiaw failed to deal with a through ball and the Brentford striker finished past Ramsdale once again. Newcastle, who have slipped to 14th place, have now failed to win an away league game since April.
