We are turning to the Great Famine of 1930-1933, known in Kazakhstan as Asharshylyk, a catastrophe that erased nearly half the population. While often overshadowed by the Holodomor and the Soviet famines in Russia, this event was uniquely devastating for the nomadic people of the steppe. We explore how Filipp Goloshchyokin, the first secretary of the Kazakh ASSR, implemented radical collectivization policies with brutal efficiency. His goal was not just agricultural reform but the destruction of nomadic culture itself, forcing settled living upon horse-dependent communities. The result was mass starvation, cattle slaughter, and the loss of an entire generation of akyns, khans, and ordinary herders.
