Shalom isn’t something we hustle to achieve—it’s something we receive through relationship with Jesus, the Sar Shalom. He is our wholeness. He is our restorer. He meets us in our frayed places and gently says, “Let Me take care of that.”

Today's guest, Dr. Haley French, is an Assistant Professor of Professional Counseling in the Graduate School of Counseling at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in both Oklahoma and Colorado. She earned her BA in music from ORU in 2006, and an MDiv from ORU in 2009. She went on to complete a degree in clinical mental health counseling from Denver Seminary in 2012, and her PhD in practical theology from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland in 2019. She specializes in the area of integration studies concerned with the relationship between Christianity and counseling.

In this episode, we explore a Biblical perspective on health, gleaning rich insights from Dr. French's integration studies of Christianity and counseling and diving into the concept of shalom. Most of us associate shalom with "peace" or "wellbeing," however, as Dr. French explains, it encompasses much much more! Passionate about bridging the gap between therapists and theologians, Dr. French discusses how interdisciplinary work can enrich our lives and provide more comprehensive care to those seeking help for mental health concerns. There's an immense need for healing and restoration as we observe a growing mental health crisis in our nation and world. Dr. French shares perspective on how walking through mental health challenges is revolutionized in light of the robust meaning of shalom. Reflecting on her own lived experiences and expertise, Dr. French also shares self-care practices to promote health and flourishing.

Today's guest, joining us from the United Kingdom, is (Heulwen) Marina Carrier, author and founder of an online ministry serving the brokenhearted and those who know the pain of loss, neglect, and abandonment. Marina herself lived through early childhood trauma as an illegitimate, unwanted child, suffering sexual abuse and neglect, and eventually being left for dead at the age of nine. Despite her horrific suffering, she was given great grace to follow a career in education, including research, where she became the Head of Department of In-Service Education of Teachers. Despite the joys of her career, she was confronted with her own mental exhaustion and emotional baggage that led her to seek God to guide and sustain her through a healing journey of acknowledging and listening to her inner pain. She is the author of a trilogy, He Heals the Brokenhearted, and compassionately serves her online community, helping traumatized individuals face their pain and give their burdens to Christ.

During this interview, we explore the topics of healing, forgiveness, resilience and surrender, as Marina illuminates how the Holy Spirit delivered her out of despair into hope and joy again! Marina's story is truly one that resonates with the saying, "God takes our mess and turns it into a message!" Marina's words of wisdom, inspiration and her determination to live in the love of Christ will beckon you to seek to know God more intimately.
