How can tiny fossils buried beneath the ocean reveal hundreds of thousands of years of Earth’s climate history?

For the finale of our Italian American Heritage Month series, Meteorology Matters celebrates Cesare Emiliani (1922–1995), the Italian-born American scientist whose groundbreaking discoveries transformed our understanding of the Ice Ages and helped establish the modern science of paleoceanography.

Born in Bologna, Italy, Emiliani immigrated to the United States, earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago, and eventually joined the University of Miami, where he spent decades advancing the study of Earth’s oceans and climate.

His revolutionary research involved microscopic marine organisms called foraminifera, whose fossilized shells preserve chemical evidence of ancient ocean conditions. By studying oxygen isotopes in these shells, Emiliani demonstrated that Earth’s Ice Ages followed recurring cycles rather than isolated, unpredictable events.

His discoveries helped establish Marine Isotope Stages, strengthened the scientific foundations for investigating Earth’s orbital climate cycles, and paved the way for generations of research into ancient temperatures, glaciation, ocean circulation, and long-term environmental change.

But Emiliani’s influence went further. His vision for recovering deep-ocean sediment cores helped launch a new era of scientific ocean drilling, fundamentally changing our understanding of Earth’s history.

We’ll explore his journey from wartime Italy to American scientific prominence, his research achievements, his years at the University of Miami, and why understanding Earth’s climatic past remains essential to modern meteorology and climate science.

This episode also carries a personal connection: Meteorology Matters producer Rob Jones studied and worked at the University of Miami, including its Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, an institution closely connected to Emiliani’s scientific legacy.

As Italian American Heritage Month concludes, we reflect on the contributions of Italian and Italian American scientists whose discoveries deserve greater recognition—and why figures such as Cesare Emiliani offer extraordinary examples of scientific achievement to celebrate.

From the depths of the ocean to the history of Earth’s atmosphere, this is the remarkable story of a scientist who helped teach humanity how to read the planet’s climatic past.
