- The Hoche was launched on 29 September 1886 and did not enter full commission until 12 January 1891, a delay of about four and a half years.
- The working group found the original hull too small by June 1880, leading to lengthening and reduced wing-gun weight; the revised design was approved 31 January 1881.
- On 17 August 1882 the French Navy required fully armored centerline turrets, prompting lowering the hull by an entire deck to maintain stability.
- The armor belt measured 457 millimeters and was found almost entirely underwater when the ship was completed.
- Six hundred and eleven men served aboard the Hoche at the time she earned the nickname "le Grand Hôtel."
