Joseph Kahn’s Detention: postmodern masterpiece or worthless trash movie from hell? Kirstie argues there’s simply no need to decide.

A bunch of lads from Detroit go deer hunting and get more than they bargained for in this kinetic 2022 horror effort that Joe says he respects rather than loves.

Check the runtime on this bad boy before you hit play because there’s a LOT of painfully nerdy chat ahead in this episode where Al Kennedy returns unexpectedly to watch Mercy, the Chris Pratt screenlife movie about an ill-advised AI justice system.

Joe and Kirstie look back at the first video game movie adaptation and, probably much like the people who make these things, wonder what it actually takes to make a good one.

Joe comes to Frogtown instead of hell after experiencing this Roddy Piper sci-fi sexploitation flop, which should probably come with a slew of trigger warnings but maintains such a consistently absurd vibe that it’s hard to know if they’d even do any good.

Altmanesque movies are Kirstie’s extremely pathetic mental Kryptonite, so 1972 action-comedy Fuzz proves tricky. It’s up to Joe to explain why this particular cop movie is more realistic than others (and much better than people think).

This episode also contains an extra-long “recently watched” section and a varied discussion about policing history and culture. Strap in for all that (and a genuinely surprising amount of boner jokes).

Joe and Kirstie have been too busy frolicking in the sun to record an episode! Jokes, jokes. They've been drowning in work and other life crap.

To make up for no new episode this week, please accept this humble offering: an old Patreon episode where Joe gets so curious about one of Kirstie's favorite bands, Ghost, who he's never actually listened to, that he agrees to watch the two-hour-plus concert movie they put out in theaters back in 2024.
