  • Episode 213: The Economics of Golf
    2026/07/01

Peter Howitt won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2025 for his theory of creative destruction: the idea that innovation drives growth by rendering the old obsolete. He also lives on the 10th tee of a Tom Fazio golf course in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and golf is the only thing that can quiet his beautiful mind. On this episode of the TGJ Podcast, he joins Tom Coyne to break down the economics of golf: why Prestwick is a textbook case of obsolescence, what the Pro V1 did to the wound ball, why rolling back the golf ball fails as economic policy, and what LIV's disruption of the PGA Tour reveals about competition, business stealing, and superstar markets. You'll see the game differently after this one.

  • Episode 212: Jimmy Dunne’s Guide to Shinnecock
    2026/06/11

Nobody knows Shinnecock like Jimmy Dunne. A South Shore Long Island kid who caddied and painted houses in the summers, Dunne played Shinnecock at 16 after landing a painting job at a member's house in Southampton. He walked off the 18th convinced it was the greatest golf course in the world. Now the president of Seminole GC and a member at Augusta National, Pine Valley, and Cypress Point, he still feels that way. On this episode of the TGJ Podcast, Tom Coyne joins Dunne in his Southampton golf shrine to share what he loves about Shinnecock and preview the U.S. Open. Dunne also discusses his legendary 63 at Shinnecock, how memorizing every caddie's name at Augusta became a dealmaker's cheat code, and what it was like helping steer the PGA Tour through its war with LIV. It’s a rare look at one of the world’s most iconic grounds through the eyes of someone who’s played them all.

  • Episode 211: Taylor Twellman Previews the World Cup and Shinnecock
    2026/06/03

How big of a golf sicko is Apple TV’s lead soccer analyst Taylor Twellman? In 2018, Twellman—who retired in 2010 as MLS's all-time leading scorer and was at that point at ESPN—unleashed what is still the most viral rant in US soccer history when the Americans failed to make the World Cup. What most don’t know is that the next day he was set to embark on a four-day golf bender through Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Sebonack and Friar's Head. The rant made him an overnight sensation, and forced Twellman to stay in the studio. But as he explains to TGJ’s Travis Hill, he’s so hooked on golf that he’ll forever regret missing the trip. In this episode, Twellman discusses the importance of golf in his life, breaks down how the USMNT can make a run at the 2026 World Cup, and explains why Argentina is the Bryson DeChambeau of this summer’s competition.
