    in the footsteps of super djata: bamba wassoulou groove

    bamba wassoulou groove is a direct descendant of super djata band. you could even say that's the point. bamba dembélé, who played in super djata band alongside zani diabaté, founded this group in 2013, two years after zani passed. it was a tribute that became its own thing. and today, under the leadership of guitarist moussa diabaté, they are still very much active and touring. this episode is about their 2020 album dankélé. it's beautifully produced, shot in bamako, and it sounds like nothing else coming out of mali right now. it also happens to be the most similar sounding thing to the lobi traoré album we covered a while back. if you liked that one, you are really going to like this. we also get into what malians call bamana foli, the guitar ride, the donso tradition, and why bainy diabaté playing the guitar backwards like jimi hendrix makes him one of the most interesting guitar teachers i've ever had. this is the gold transmission. we go behind the curtain so you can hear how the music actually gets made.

    this episode is a little different.

    no song breakdown. no demo. just the why.

    orchestra gold is built on a simple but demanding idea: that the unique alchemy that happens when people of very different identities come together has medicine in it. not just symbolically. practically. the person least like you has what you most need.

    that idea goes back to sly stone, carlos santana, antibalas, the good people at stax records in memphis. it's not new. but the intention we're bringing to it might be.

    because one of the biggest obstacles to a world where everyone belongs is the spell of supremacy. and the way it manifests unconsciously in all of us. it's about deprogramming. about why music is a side door into that work in ways that direct conversation sometimes isn't.
