Before we talk about moving abroad, international careers, ancestral travel, or building community in a new country, we begin with a deeper question: Where do we come from?

In the first episode of The Global Melanin Edit, we explore foundational Black American lineage, the diversity of African origins, the historical forces that disrupted family records, and the cultures and communities that survived. We also make space for the Indigenous nations and living communities whose histories began long before the United States was created and continue today.

This conversation is not about deciding who is more authentic or forcing anyone into an identity label. It is an invitation to hold a fuller history, listen to people who describe their own communities, and research family stories with care.

You will learn about oral history, family documents, Freedmen’s Bureau records, DNA testing, and the limits of treating a DNA result as a complete biography. We close by asking how the histories we inherit should influence the way we travel, reconnect, relocate, and show up in the places we choose to visit or call home.
