In 1920, Dr. Robert Wade Brown was shot and killed inside his Washington, D.C. home. Nearly a year later, James Frye confessed—but later claimed his confession was false and that he had acted in self-defense.

His attorneys turned to psychologist William Moulton Marston, who tested Frye with an early lie detector and concluded he was telling the truth.

The court refused to hear the results.

That case would go on to establish the Frye Test, changing how scientific evidence is considered in American courts.
