The one roll of film every single one of us shoots exactly once. I've owed you this story since episode one.

Today I pay a debt. This is the episode I promised at the very beginning of the show: the first roll. Mine was slide film, handed to me by the friend who dragged me into all this, which I now know is like learning to swim by falling off a boat. Most of my frames came back as failures. Two came back as magic. That ratio is the whole story.

I tell you three first rolls, composites with everything identifiable changed but feelings that are documentary: the inheritance (a grandfather's camera that turns out to hold his way of seeing, and it still works), the traveler (thirty-six slow frames, and the only photograph from ten days that he actually owns), and the romantic (the fantasy of film broken, and something better handed back). Then we open the machinery: the wait that makes you forget, so you meet your own life as a stranger. The failures that put a price tag on the good frames. And the surprise, the gap between what you expected and what you received, which plants the question every photographer starts with: was that luck, or was that me? There's only one way to find out.

Get out and shoot: if you've never shot film, one cheap roll, and your quality target is zero good frames. You're shooting to finish the roll and feel the wait; the two magic frames will show up anyway. Already have a first roll?
