In this episode’s reading from Anne Gudger’s book The Fifth Chamber, Annie shares
from the chapter “Stuck.” At 22, Annie, an inexperienced hiker, is confronted with a
football-sized boulder field during a 30-day mountaineering course in the high country of
Wyoming. Despite being 5’2” with a 60-pound pack strapped to her back, she navigates
the field with grit and determination, until she slips and falls and finds herself stuck,
wedged between two massive boulders. She swings between fear and frustration with a
heap of swearing too, until she sees how funny she looks, like a beetle on its back,
arms and legs flailing. Laughter is what breaks her free. She didn’t know it then, but all
she learned during the 30day backpacking course would help hold her through her grief.
She learned she could do hard things and that’s a lesson she’s never forgotten.
