Southern Airways Flight 242 suffered a catastrophic accident in 1977 after flying directly into a powerful hailstorm. Outdated weather information and unreliable radar gave the crew an incomplete picture of the storm, leaving them unaware of just how severe the conditions ahead had become.
As the aircraft entered the storm, enormous amounts of hail and water struck the plane, severely damaging both engines. The engines eventually lost power, leaving the pilots with no choice but to attempt an emergency landing. With no suitable airport within reach, the crew tried to land on a highway in New Hope, Georgia.
The emergency landing turned into a devastating crash that killed 72 people and caused widespread destruction in the surrounding community. Survivors and witnesses described scenes of extraordinary chaos, while the tragedy left a lasting emotional impact on New Hope.
The accident exposed serious weaknesses in weather detection and cockpit decision-making during extreme precipitation. It ultimately contributed to improvements in aviation weather monitoring, storm avoidance procedures, and understanding how severe weather can affect aircraft engines.
