  • Politics vs Escapism: The dualism of Fandom?
    2025/08/21

    Hi Fangrrrls,

In this episode of the Fan GRRRL Podcast, we explore the evolving landscape of pop culture, politics and fandom, as we find ourselves either politically charged or politically fatigued, and using our fandom to comfort those emotions.

Even though we said we wouldn't be talking as much about Miss Swiftie (we lied), we focus on Taylor Swift's recent album announcement and how it signals a move into escapism in pop culture compared to the recent political moments of CMAT, Kneecap, Bob Vylan and Hayley Williams.

We discuss the intersection of politics and music, and the role of nostalgia in shaping fan experiences that look for something culturally simpler in a turbulent period.

Can fandom be both political and escapist? The conversation highlights the importance of community support within fandoms, especially in times of political fatigue, and emphasizes the need for a balance between escapism and political engagement in music.

  • We Are Back, Fangrrrls!
    2025/07/17

    Hiiii fangrrrls,

In this episode, we discuss updates on our PhD journeys, exploring themes of fandom, emo subculture, and the complexities of being a fangirl in today's society.

The conversation also touches on current trends in fandom, from the dynamics of authenticity and social media within the Sleep Token fandom to xenophobia and privileged social status among concert goers.

We finish up discussing what we are fangrrrling over, from Dani's posh academic book on authenticity and selling out in punk and emo culture to Jess's obsession with V.E. Schwab's toxic lesbian vampires (it's as good as it sounds).

We can't wait to catch up with you! Let us know what you are fangrrrling over in the comments.

    xoxo

    Dani & Jess
