Not "who takes the kids to the dentist?" but "who remembers that the kids need to go?" In the first episode of The Famiyo Table, host Oliver talks with clinical psychologist and couples coach Dr. Hannah Reeve about the mental load: the invisible work of noticing, planning and keeping track of everything a family needs. They cover the four stages of cognitive household labour (anticipate, identify options, decide, monitor), why it so often falls on mothers, the "just tell me what to do" trap, and what an unbalanced load does to a relationship. Then they get practical: a brain-dump list, owning whole areas of responsibility from start to finish, moving the family schedule out of one head into a shared, colour-coded family calendar, giving kids their own chores with points and rewards, and a ten-minute weekly check-in.

Key takeaways

• The mental load is the work of thinking about the household (noticing, planning, tracking), as opposed to doing the tasks themselves. It is invisible by design: the better someone does it, the less anyone notices.
• Research by sociologist Allison Daminger (2019) splits it into four stages: anticipate, identify options, decide and monitor. Couples often share deciding, while anticipating and monitoring fall disproportionately on women.
• "Just tell me what to do" makes one partner the manager. Having to ask is itself the work.
• Step 1, the brain dump: write down everything it takes to run your family, together.
• Step 2, own whole areas, not single tasks: the owner handles the full loop from noticing to follow-up, and the other partner lets go.
• Step 3, move the schedule out of one person's head into a shared system everyone can see, such as a colour-coded family calendar where reminders go to whoever owns the event.
• Give children their own chores (with points and agreed rewards) so they grow up seeing family work as shared.
• Hold a ten-minute weekly check-in: open the calendar together and agree who has what this week.
