Once intended to launch a major new DC superhero franchise, Green Lantern became one of the most infamous superhero movie failures of the 2010s. With a huge budget, an established comic book character, and Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, Warner Bros. expected Green Lantern to become the beginning of something much bigger. Instead, it became a critical disappointment, a box office underperformer, and a movie that has become synonymous with everything that can go wrong with a blockbuster production. In this video, I take a deep retrospective look at Green Lantern (2011) and explore exactly why the movie failed. We go behind the scenes of the production, examine the creative decisions that shaped the film, and look at the many problems that plagued the movie before it ever reached theaters. But the problems don't stop at the production. I also dive deep into the movie itself, examining its story, characters, worldbuilding, visual effects, action sequences, villains, and screenplay to figure out why Green Lantern is such an incredibly un-engaging superhero movie. Finally, we'll look at the film's critical reception, box office performance, and legacy, including how its failure affected Warner Bros.' plans for the Green Lantern franchise and the future of DC movies. In this video, we discuss: The troubled production of Green LanternWhy Warner Bros. had such high expectations for the movieThe development of the Green Lantern screenplayRyan Reynolds as Hal JordanThe problems with the movie's story and charactersWhy the Green Lantern Corps and mythology weren't properly utilizedThe film's infamous CGI and visual effectsParallax, Sinestro, and the movie's villainsWhy the movie feels so un-engaging despite its enormous budgetThe critical reception to Green LanternThe movie's disappointing box office performanceHow Green Lantern affected the future of DC moviesThe film's strange legacy within the history of superhero cinema Green Lantern is often remembered simply as a bad superhero movie, but the story behind its failure is much more interesting. It is a fascinating case study in blockbuster filmmaking, studio interference, franchise planning, and what happens when a movie is designed to launch a universe before the filmmakers have figured out the movie itself. More than a decade later, it's time to revisit Green Lantern and ask how one of DC's most recognizable superheroes ended up with one of the most infamous movies in the genre.
