In the spring of 1583, John Dee, one of Elizabethan England’s leading mathematicians and collectors of manuscripts, began recording an unfamiliar alphabet revealed during scrying sessions with Edward Kelley. Kelley claimed to see beings in a crystal or reflective stone. Dee wrote down their messages, their symbols, and eventually words in what he called Angelical or Celestial Speech. Later generations gave it another name: Enochian.

The surviving sixteenth-century manuscripts, including British Library Sloane MS 3188 and Sloane MS 3189, contain a twenty-one-character alphabet, translated invocations called the Angelic Keys, and vast letter grids associated with Liber Loagaeth, the Book of the Speech of God. Dee believed the material might preserve a primordial language connected to Adam, Enoch, and knowledge lost after humanity’s earliest age.

The evidence establishes that Dee and Kelley produced an elaborate system over repeated sessions. It does not establish that angels were its source. Linguistic analysis, including the work of Donald Laycock, has found significant relationships between Enochian’s apparent structures and English. Yet the scale of the manuscripts, the persistence of the sessions, and Dee’s apparent seriousness make the story more complicated than a simple tale of random invention.

Was Enochian an intentional construction, a product of trance and ritual, an elaborate deception by Kelley, a collaboration neither man fully understood, or a record of an encounter beyond ordinary explanation? The manuscripts remain, but the source of the language does not.
