In the autumn of 1977, an ordinary family living in a modest house in Enfield, North London, found themselves at the center of one of the most disturbing paranormal cases ever documented.

It began with strange noises.

Then came unexplained movements. Furniture appeared to move on its own. Objects were reportedly thrown across rooms. Knocking sounds seemed to come from inside the walls. And eventually, witnesses claimed to hear a strange voice coming from one of the children in the house.

What followed would become an extraordinary investigation involving police officers, journalists, paranormal researchers, neighbors, and investigators from the Society for Psychical Research.

For nearly two years, researchers Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair investigated the house, recording hundreds of hours of audio and documenting events that they believed could not easily be explained. Police officers also visited the property, and at least one officer reported witnessing an apparently unexplained movement inside the house.

But was the Enfield house truly haunted?

Or was something else happening behind the scenes?

Were the children victims of a terrifying supernatural phenomenon, or were some of the events deliberately staged? Could stress, suggestion, deception, or other psychological and physical explanations account for what happened?

And perhaps most importantly: how much of the Enfield story can actually be proven?
