  • Can E-Waste Power India’s Energy Security? | Dr Abhinav Mathur
    2026/08/29

India generates close to 6 million metric tonnes of electronic waste
every year, yet less than 10% is scientifically recycled end-to-end. At the same time, India’s demand for critical minerals is rising rapidly across EVs, renewable energy, electronics and defence.

In this episode of Energy Transition Dialogues, host Vaibhav Chaudhary speaks with Dr Abhinav Mathur of Attero about how recycling and the circular economy could become critical to India’s resource security.

The conversation explores the economics of e-waste recycling, recovery of critical
minerals and rare earths, the environmental impact of informal recycling, carbon-
emission reductions from recycled materials, India’s National Critical Minerals
Mission, EPR regulations, GST on waste and the investment required to build a
    large-scale formal recycling ecosystem.

Dr Mathur also discusses Attero’s R&D and recycling technology, its ability to extract more than 28 elements from different waste streams, and why stronger policy support and investment could help India reduce its dependence on virgin mining and imported critical minerals.
