What would you do if you discovered a way to duplicate valuable items in an MMO? Report it immediately? Test it once to make sure it is real? Tell a friend? Sell a few items before the developers patch it? Or convince yourself that destroying the game’s economy is technically research?
In this episode, Boss Mode dives into the dangerous and surprisingly complicated world of item duplication exploits. From duplicated currency and impossible-to-obtain materials to flooded auction houses, ruined markets, emergency rollbacks, and players who suddenly become suspiciously wealthy overnight, we’re exploring the moral gray zone between discovering an exploit and abusing one.
The Duper’s Dilemma is not just about whether players should use a bug. It’s about temptation, opportunity, greed, fear, and the strange logic people use when they know they are doing something wrong but believe the system deserves it. If the game lets you do it, is it really cheating? If you report it, are you protecting the community or giving everyone else a chance to catch up? If you profit from the exploit before it is fixed, can you honestly call yourself innocent because you only used it “a little”?
Boss Mode examines how duplication exploits can damage economies, destroy trust, punish legitimate players, and turn ordinary adventurers into overnight financial criminals. Because in MMO economies, the fastest way to become rich is sometimes not clever trading, hard work, or patience.
Sometimes it is pressing the same button twice and hoping nobody notices.
