Before the arrest. Before the charges. Before the courtroom. There was the list. And the list started with Santa Claus — banned from the Duggar household because, in the IBLP’s teaching, his name rearranged to spell the enemy’s.

Tony Brueski goes deep on the IBLP blacklist — the catalogue of everyday American life that Bill Gothard’s organization handed to the Duggar family and called holy. Cabbage Patch dolls, declared demonic and ordered burned. Disney movies, thrown on a bonfire by the family itself. Rock music, even Christian rock, taught to hand Satan a piece of a child’s soul. Monster Energy drinks, Harry Potter, Pokémon, Barbies — gone. Board games replaced with an IBLP version where children landed in the “venomous pit of bitterness” instead of jail. The Duggar daughters confirmed in their own book that the family used the word “Nike” in public so the men could stare at their shoes when an attractive woman passed.

Then the blacklist moves past the toy chest. Pants on women, ungodly. Therapy, satanic. Mental health medication, evil. IBLP published disease charts assigning sins to illnesses — migraines caused by guilt, sinus infections by fear. Birth control forbidden even when doctors warned that pregnancy could kill the mother. Tampons confiscated from teenage girls and called instruments of pleasure. Infants struck for crawling off a blanket in a practice the Duggars called “encouragement.”

Tony reveals the system hiding inside the list. Each prohibition removes one more connection to the outside world. No outside books, no television, no therapists, no doctors, no secular friends, no unsupervised conversations. That’s not faith. That’s a wall. And the man who built it was accused of harassing 34 women in his own organization. This is the world Joseph Duggar grew up in. This is the world Kendra married into. Robin Dreeke, Ret. Your grandmother locked your bedroom door every night. Nobody told you why. You were never allowed to be alone with your grandfather. And the family treated that as normal.

That's how Amy Duggar King grew up. Jim Bob Duggar's niece. Close enough to spend nearly every day with her cousins. Close enough to see what the cameras missed. And in her memoir Holy Disruptor, she finally said what the family had buried — her grandfather Jimmy Lee Duggar was allegedly violent, predatory, and protected by silence.

Now Joseph Duggar is out on a $600,000 bond after being arrested on a charge of lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under twelve, according to the Bay County Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit. Kendra Duggar faces her own charges in Arkansas. Investigators reportedly found locks on the outside of their children's bedroom doors — the same kind of detail Amy remembers from her own childhood, except reversed. In her house, the lock kept danger out. In Joseph and Kendra's house, according to investigators, the locks kept children in.
