  • S2 | Chapter 4: Adele's Journey Through Heartbreak & Emotional Regret
    2026/07/13

    Media Interpretation no. 2

    Abstract

This chapter is my interpretation of Adele's "Someone Like You," a Grammy-winning song inspired by Adele's bittersweet heartbreak and her devastating attachment to her former ex. Filmed in Paris, France, the city of Love, this interpretation uses Adele as a model to describe the need for closure and intimacy in traditional relationships, while emphasizing how obliviousness to non-verbal cues leads to unreciprocated connections and emotional regret that linger on "what-if" scenarios. At the same time, the song explores the importance of value through passion projects, inspiring other content creators to confront past struggles and move beyond emotional attachment in relationships.

This chapter is my interpretation of ILLENIUM's Nightlight, which reflects themes of the sublime through its setting and emotional vulnerability, where the music video's character experiences internal struggle and mental looping cycles throughout her journey across a rough landscape. In the final lecture chapter of The Double Attraction Paradox, Rem reflects on his memoir, Attraction as a Hidden Mask, and analyzes his senior-year experience through psychological and social lenses. By examining topics such as high school cliques, fear of rejection, vulnerability, peer pressure, and limerence, he explores how silent attraction can lead to ambiguity, obsession, and missed connections. This chapter serves as both a personal conclusion and a lesson for adolescents learning to navigate crushes, communication, and self-discovery.

In this chapter, we explore the psychology of attention and attraction through concepts such as the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, selective attention, confirmation bias, the Communication Accommodation Theory, the Halo Effect, and the Social Penetration Theory. We will also examine focal points, limbic synchrony, scopaesthesia, non-verbal communication, and modern behaviors such as bookmarking, venting, extinction bursts, and retrogradation. By connecting these theories to crush dynamics and personal experiences from my senior year, this episode explains how attention can evolve into emotional investment, idealization, and sometimes dependency.
