In November of 2022, I pulled into the Desert Moon Motel outside of Needles, California, just past midnight. The place was almost empty — a few trucks in the lot, a single light on behind the office glass. The clerk handed me a key to room 121 and said, without looking up, 'Don't go past the vending machine.' I asked what he meant. He just pointed down the hallway. I took the key. I walked past the vending machine. I kept walking. The hallway was longer than any building that size should have — a row of identical doors, same brass numbers, same peepholes, same thin sliver of light underneath each one. The last door didn't have a number. It wasn't locked. I turned the knob. That was five months ago.
