Ryan Mercer thought he was spending one last weekend repairing the eastern fence around his late father’s farmhouse before selling the property. The job was simple: replace storm-bent posts, secure the boundary for his neighbor’s cattle, and leave before dark.
Then, while Ryan is still holding his hammer, three measured strikes ring out from the far end of the fence.
His headlights reveal a tall shape standing beside an orange survey marker at the tree line. At first, Ryan assumes it is a trespasser. Then the figure’s pointed ears turn toward the truck without the rest of its body moving.
As the fence begins to bend, the sounds move closer, and something leaves a track inside the yard, Ryan realizes the boundary he spent all day repairing may not be keeping anything out.
