Why is artificial intelligence so comforting when we do not know what to do? In this episode of AnthroIntelligence: Culture, Cognition, and Code, I explore how generative AI may appeal not only because it is efficient, but because it offers immediate answers when uncertainty feels difficult.

Drawing from a study of 677 adult generative AI users, this episode examines the relationships among intolerance of uncertainty, competitiveness, narcissism, and problematic AI use. AI can turn hesitation into a draft, confusion into options, and uncertainty into apparent direction—but that convenience may also encourage us to escape the discomfort that helps human judgment develop.

The issue is not simply how often we use AI, but what function it serves. Is it helping us think through uncertainty, or helping us avoid it? In a world where the machine is always ready with an answer, the challenge may be preserving our ability to wait, doubt, reflect, and continue without certainty.
