In which I observe the busy stir of London life and my own anxious reckonings with affairs both public and private, amidst the preparations and the performances that give colour to these days; my thoughts often turn to business, to the theatre, and to the dealings and company of gentlemen, whilst I strive to secure means for my expenses and reflect upon the many small events that richly fill the measure of my time. In this March I note the comings and goings of the court, the humours of the town, the health and concerns of family and friends, and the steady chime of duty and pleasure well interwoven, all set against the rumour and reality of matters political and naval that whisper through the city’s streets.
