A deputy on night patrol. A light that would not move. Fourteen minutes that never came back.

In the early hours of August 27, 1979, Marshall County Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson was patrolling the empty farm roads of northwestern Minnesota, roughly ten miles west of Stephen and twenty miles from the county seat of Warren. Near the junction of County Road 5 and State Highway 220, he saw a brilliant, sharply defined light hovering a few feet above the pavement. He turned toward it. Seconds later, by his account, the light was inside his car.

When Johnson came to, his 1977 Ford LTD sat crosswise on the highway at the end of ninety-nine feet of skid marks. The windshield was cracked, a headlight was smashed, the roof light was punctured, and both radio antennas were bent back. His eyes burned as if he had stared into a welder's arc. His wristwatch and the dashboard clock had both lost exactly fourteen minutes. The sheriff believed him. The Center for UFO Studies could not explain it. A famous skeptic called it a hoax. Nobody ever proved anything.

Tonight, host Sierra Sterling opens the Marshall County file: the radio call that woke a sleeping dispatcher, the squad car that became a museum piece, the engineers and ufologists who measured every crack, the skeptic who said a hammer could do it all, and the deputy who simply decided to move on with his life.

Keep the doors locked. Keep the volume low. Tonight’s file, is open.
