    Presenter Hannah Walker's guest this episode is Professor AbuBakr Bahaj.

    He leads the Energy and Climate Change Division and the Sustainable Energy Research Group (ECCD) at the University of Southampton.

    For more than 30 years, Professor Bahaj has pioneered sustainable energy research and established the energy theme within the university where he also completed his PhD, progressing from a researcher to expert in sustainable energy.

    Professor Bahaj founded the international Marine Energy Journal, in 2012 he was appointed chief scientific advisor to Southampton City Council and in 2014 the UK Science Council named him as one of the UK’s 100 leading practicing scientists.

    Andrew holds an MSc in Environmental Technology/Energy Policy from Imperial College London and a MA in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from the University of Cambridge.

    Hannah's guest in this episode is Paul Bushnell, estates works manager at the University of York. He is currently leading a hugely ambitious geothermal project on campus.

    The university hopes to cut its fossil fuel use and spearhead the city of York's net zero ambitions. The project is backed by £35 million in funding.

    The aim is to harness the earth's natural heat to decarbonise the campus, while also providing invaluable research and educational opportunities.

    Paul gives an insight into the vision behind the project.

    Hannah's guest this time is Claire Parkinson, energy manager at the Carbon Trust.

    The trust is on a mission to decarbonisation the future for all of us. It partners with businesses, governments and financial institutions to accelerate their route to net zero.

    Claire’s role is to collaborate across the public and private sector to discover climate solutions, and how we can all better tackle our carbon footprint. She is a certified energy manager who has also worked with the Welsh Government supporting the Net Zero Carbon agenda in Wales.

    Claire manages carbon foot printing projects and decarbonisation strategies for private and public sector clients.

    Since 2024, Celeste has been a policy manager at the Aviation Environment Federation. Her background is in campaigning and communications, having previously worked as a journalist for 15 years and as a communications manager at Transport & Environment.

    Celeste has had roles in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and is also the author of three books.

    Hannah's guest in this episode is Professor Helen Findlay. She joined Plymouth Marine Laboratory to complete her PhD in 2006, on ocean acidification and climate change impact on marine populations.

    Helen is a member of the Executive Council for the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network and lead coordinator for the North East Atlantic Ocean Acidification, which aims to establish accurate global monitoring of acidification, share knowledge and build capacity, to underpin solutions.

    Helen also contributes to raising public awareness of ocean health and to training the next generation of scientists through school educational programmes. In our podcast Helen explains what is happening to our oceans in the face of climate change.

    Our guest for this episode is Professor Emily Shuckburgh, director of Cambridge Zero, the University of Cambridge's major climate change initiative.

    Emily is a mathematician and climate scientist. She worked for more than a decade at the British Antarctic Survey where she led a UK national research programme on the Southern Ocean and its role in climate.

    She has also been an advisor on climate to the UK government.

    Emily was awarded an OBE in 2016 and a CBE in 2025. She is co-author with HM King Charles III and Tony Juniper of the Ladybird Book on climate change.

    In our podcast she tells presenter Hannah Walker why she really does keep a bottle of water from the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean on her desk.
