“Sleep divorce” sounds like a harmless life hack until you realize what it trains your marriage to accept: separation as the default. Matthew and Monica Powers take on the viral trend of couples sleeping in separate bedrooms for better rest, reacting to the Today Show-style hype and asking the question nobody wants to say out loud. If we split at night, what else do we start splitting next?
We get specific about the real reasons couples sleeping apart is catching on: snoring, different schedules, tossing and turning, blanket stealing, room temperature disagreements, and midnight bathroom trips. Then we talk solutions that protect both sleep health and relationship health, like sleep apnea testing, sleep hygiene, diet and exercise changes, earplugs, side sleeping, and investing in a better mattress or a bigger bed. Great sleep matters, but we do not buy the idea that you have to lose shared space to get it.
We also go deeper than comfort. Separate bedrooms can mean less physical touch, less cuddling, less spontaneous sex, and more isolation with a phone in your hand. When your bedtime routine becomes solo scrolling, you are not just changing your sleep, you are changing your intimacy, your emotional safety, and your guardrails. We share why this can slide into the roommate phase where conversations turn logistical and “yours” and “mine” replaces “us,” plus what it teaches kids about marriage.
