The Dark Side of American Presidents: Sex, Scandals, Racism & Corruption

What if some of the most powerful men in American history were also responsible for some of the country's most disturbing decisions, scandals, and abuses of power?

In this episode of Lunatics and Legends, Eddie and Branden take a deep dive into the darker side of the American presidency, examining the controversial actions, questionable morals, political corruption, and shocking personal lives of some of the men who occupied the White House.

From the years leading up to the Civil War to the scandals of the 20th century, the guys explore a side of presidential history that doesn't always make it into the classroom.

The conversation begins with presidents like Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan, whose administrations supported policies protecting and expanding slavery during one of the most divided periods in American history. They examine the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott decision, and the political failures that helped push the country toward the Civil War.

The discussion continues with Andrew Johnson, whose presidency became one of the most controversial chapters of Reconstruction, raising questions about civil rights, constitutional protections, and the motivations of America's political leaders.

But the scandals don't stop with the Civil War.

Eddie and Branden explore Warren G. Harding's administration, including the infamous Teapot Dome scandal, allegations of widespread government corruption, political favoritism, and Harding's numerous extramarital affairs.

They also examine Herbert Hoover's leadership during the Great Depression and the economic decisions that contributed to one of the most devastating periods in American history.

Then comes Lyndon B. Johnson.

From his notoriously vulgar behavior and controversial racial politics to the Vietnam War and accusations of government deception, the guys discuss why LBJ remains one of the most polarizing presidents in American history.

And because no presidential discussion would be complete without a few dishonorable mentions, they also explore controversies involving Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Grover Cleveland, Bill Clinton, and Woodrow Wilson.

Throughout the episode, Eddie and Branden challenge the idea that presidents should be celebrated without criticism. They debate the difference between personal character and political accomplishments, question the loyalty of America's political parties, and examine how corruption and abuses of power can survive from one administration to the next.

Were these presidents simply flawed men making difficult decisions, or does American history reveal a much deeper pattern of political corruption and self-interest?

With their signature humor, sarcasm, and willingness to tackle uncomfortable subjects, Eddie and Branden revisit the history of the American presidency without putting anyone on a pedestal.

Now we want to hear from you: Who do you believe was the best president in American history, who was the worst, and why?
