A Fathers Gift

Harold Hugh Ritchie was born June 1932 in Port Arthur, Texas. There wasn’t anything particularly grand about his birth or place where he was born. He grew up in the shadow of an older sister like any boy, rough and tumble. His father worked for a furniture store at that time but soon began to work for “The Texas Company” (as grandad used to call it) which became Texaco. Due to Lillian’s health (Harold’s mother) they moved to Long Beach, California. But she passed away not long after arriving. Things quickly changed with the addition of a stepmother and stepbrother. Harold grew up in Southern California playing football, softball, riding motorcycles and working at a Japanese Nursery.

At the end of Steve Carrell’s time on the TV show “The Office,” his last episode ends with him leaving to go to Colorado to meet his soon to be wife a day earlier than everyone thought he was leaving. During the episode, he tries to bond with each person in his or their own special way. Well, at the end, it’s nearing 4:00 when he is about to head to the airport and only Jim figures out that it’s his last day. Michael turns after he puts on his overcoat and stares across the office looking at all his office mates one last time. They are obliviously continuing their work, as you would expect if there was nothing you suspected was different. No one looked at him except to say have a good night, or see you tomorrow or whatever departing salutation you’d say to someone you’d expect to see again. Then Jim looked at him and gave him the head nod of approval to get on out of there.

Entropy increases over time in any system. That is the essential of the second law of thermodynamics. Entropy is a funny word. It means disorder, lack of order or predictability, the gradual decline into disorder. So, increasing entropy means progressively increasing disorder. Seems contradictory, doesn’t it! An oxymoron. But this “law” is observed everywhere. That’s why a hot cup of coffee cools and a cold glass of tea warms.

How many times have you been in a situation where problems disrupted relationships, even destroyed them? Events of life where people hurt, insulted, or wronged with resulting friction in relationships? Others may have hurt me, or I may have been the weapon that injured them, it does not matter; damaged relationships result. God provides some specific principals to help us begin reconciliation. I realize that a short article will not provide all the information needed to solve them, God wrote an entire book on the subject.

We’re in a world (or society) that is corrupt to its core. We see division, lust, greed, pride, lovers of self, etc… all over the place. We have devices that promote self-indulgence into whatever we want, and how much do you suppose it’s used for the Glory of God?! We have our “wisest” among us that say to speak “your truth” and that “perspective is reality” and all manner of other idioms or colloquialisms that keep you tethered to self and make it hard to look any further than yourself. Satan’s greatest tactic, convince you that you can rely solely on yourself and not even consider that he is working on you.
