概要
A dog’s tug revealed a canvas bag with forty-seven individually sleeved gold proof coins dated 2020-coins that should not have existed until official production began in February. Who manufactured two hundred forty planchets off the books and why were nearly half dumped in a creek where a beagle might find them?
In this episode, you’ll hear how a routine trail detour led investigators to biometric logs, spoilage reports, and after-hours press runs at a federal-contract mint, and why one supervisor’s anomaly became the thread that unraveled the scheme.
Person: Jennifer Hunt
Date: December 11, 2019
Location: Dellwood Creek Nature Path, Dunmore
Facility: Crestline Mint
Supervisor: Marvin Bell
- Biscuit, a three-year-old beagle mix, located the bag roughly forty yards into a sycamore stand.
- The bag contained forty-seven gold proof coins, each dated 2020 and sleeved in clear plastic.
- Crestline’s Batch seven consisted of 240 planchets designated for the 2020 proof series.
- Marvin Bell initialed a spoilage and assay-loss entry on November 29 declaring an 18% spoilage rate; acceptable threshold was 5%.
- Biometric logs recorded 31 after-hours coining-floor entries on December 5 and December 8 between 10:15 PM and 3:40 AM while no valid personnel were on site.
