  • #60: Renee King - Fractal Courage. Healing from Trauma, TBI, Suicidal Ideation, and Imposter Syndrome
    2025/10/14

Renee King, a mother, business owner, and aspiring author, shares her transformative journey through abuse, suicidal ideation, and a catastrophic car crash in 2019 to finding new purpose and happiness. The crash led to a traumatic brain injury and significant memory loss, causing her business to collapse. Renee described her recovery process, including a self-imposed sabbatical in 2023, where she practiced daily acts of courage and creativity. She emphasized the importance of self-care, support networks, and the concept of "fractal courage" in overcoming challenges. Renee is now writing a book titled "Fractal Courage" to help others navigate their own recovery journeys. Renee King discusses her journey of overcoming imposter syndrome while writing her book, which aims to empower women to prioritize self-care. She emphasizes the importance of trying new things and challenging oneself, even in mid-life. Despite her initial fears, Renee highlights the significance of sharing personal stories to inspire others. She plans to launch her book in November and will host workshops and tours to support trauma recovery through journaling and painting techniques. Renee encourages reaching out to communities for support and reassures that everyone has the tools within them to heal and grow.

  • #58: Dr. Rhea Merck - Sports Psychology, Family Systems Therapy, Working with College Athletes
    2025/08/07

Tine and Taylor are joined by Tine's mentor and former Supervisor in University of South Carolina Athletics Mental Health, Dr. Rhea Merck. Rhea has been working with student athletes at USC for nearly a decade. She talks about what is unique in working with this population, challenges they face, and how they respond.

Prior to Athletics, Rhea studied and worked in systems theory, specifically marriage & family, which interestingly she still calls upon in her current role. Tine and Taylor discuss with Rhea the importance of understanding how family and environmental roles impact us throughout our life. Rhea breaks down how family systems theory looks at all of the 'parts' of an individual rather than putting them in a box or judging them based on certain actions or behaviors.

    2025/07/03

He calls that time The Advance in Solitude.

Co-hosts Tine and Taylor talk about what went well, what they would like to build upon, and how it felt for them before, during, and after. They also zoom out and discuss the larger topic of men's mental health, the challenges they face today, and the importance of creating spaces like the Advance to continue to redefine what being a healthy, successful man can look like.
