In this episode, we explore the complete story of the Book of Matthew like you've never seen it before. Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum who was called by Jesus to be one of the twelve apostles. His Gospel, likely written between AD 50 and 70, is the first book of the New Testament and was the most copied and quoted Gospel in the early church for the first two centuries. Matthew's purpose was both evangelism and discipleship: to help convert Jews by informing them of Jesus' life and teachings, and to disciple both believing Jews and Gentiles in how they should live as Christians.
The structure of Matthew is carefully arranged around five major discourses — the Sermon on the Mount, the Missionary Discourse, the Parables of the Kingdom, the Discourse on the Church, and the Olivet Discourse — which scholars see as a parallel to the five books of Moses (Torah). This structure presents Jesus as a new and greater Moses, one who delivers His people and provides authoritative teaching.
Matthew emphasizes three key themes: Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the Kingdom of Heaven, and Jesus as the authoritative Teacher. He quotes the Old Testament over fifty times and alludes to it many more, demonstrating that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah who fulfills God's promises to Israel. Unlike the other Gospels, Matthew uses the phrase "Kingdom of Heaven" 32 times, reflecting his Jewish audience's tradition of avoiding the direct name of God. He is also the only Gospel writer to use the term "church" (ekklesia) and to give the most complete record of the Sermon on the Mount.
