From the golden throne of Solomon to the fiery challenge on Mount Carmel — the Book of 1 Kings tells the story of a nation's rise, its tragic division, and the prophets who risked everything to call it back to God. Discover the complete story of Israel's most dramatic era like you've never seen it before.

The book of 1 Kings opens with the twilight of King David's reign and the violent succession of his son Solomon. Solomon's kingdom reached unprecedented heights of wealth and wisdom — he built the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem, prayed a powerful prayer of dedication, and became renowned across the ancient world. Yet beneath the golden surface, cracks were forming. Solomon's many foreign wives turned his heart toward other gods, and he instituted harsh forced labor practices that sowed the seeds of rebellion.

After Solomon's death, the kingdom split in two: the northern kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam, and the southern kingdom of Judah under Solomon's son Rehoboam. What followed was a tragic pattern of apostasy and decline. Jeroboam established golden calves at Bethel and Dan, committing what became known as "the sin of Jeroboam" that plagued every subsequent northern king. The northern dynasty of Omri and his son Ahab would become the most powerful and most wicked rulers of Israel, with Ahab's marriage to the Phoenician princess Jezebel leading Israel into the worship of Baal.

Amid this spiritual crisis, God raised up the prophet Elijah — a figure like Moses, whose name means "YHWH is my God" — who stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and called down fire from heaven. Elijah's ministry of prophetic confrontation, miracles, and unwavering faithfulness culminated in his dramatic departure to heaven, leaving behind his successor Elisha who would carry the prophetic mantle forward. The book closes with the death of King Ahab, a vivid reminder that kings — no matter how powerful — will be held accountable by the sovereign God whose Word never fails.
