Welcome to The Company of 2030, a new series exploring how AI is going to change not just how we work, but how we actually design and run small businesses.
We're starting with a provocative question: Do small businesses still need managers?
As AI becomes capable of holding institutional knowledge, answering routine questions, tracking accountability and giving employees access to the context they need, much of what we've traditionally called "management" may no longer require a human. That doesn't make leadership less important. In fact, great leaders may become far more valuable.
In this episode, we explore what happens when company knowledge stops living inside the owner's—or manager's—head, why some managers unintentionally create the dependency they complain about, and how to start identifying the questions and decisions your business should be able to handle without you.
Next in The Company of 2030: Your next employee might not be human. But before you start building an army of AI workers, somebody needs to answer a pretty important question: Who the heck is going to manage them?
