Professor Bertrand is a historian of the American South and the modern United States at Tennessee State University in Nashville. He has taught at the University of Memphis, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Mississippi, where he worked in the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. He co-founded and moderated H-Southern-Music and served as music editor for the African American National Biography, and has written for CNN, The Conversation, Salon, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Study the South. He has appeared in documentaries on PBS, Sky Arts, and the History Channel, produced by Henry Louis Gates, David Upshal, and Bruce
