Practical leadership for people responsible for people, performance and results. Leadership isn't complicated because we don't know enough theories. It's complicated because it involves people. The Christine Beard Leadership Collection explores the everyday work of leading and managing well — building capable people, creating accountability, having the conversations you'd rather avoid, developing managers who can think for themselves, and building businesses that don't depend on one person holding everything together. Christine Beard is a business coach who has spent years working alongside business owners and leaders dealing with the real problems that come with managing people and growing businesses. No management theatre. No leadership heroics. Just practical ideas, questions and tools to help you become a better leader — and build stronger leaders underneath you.© 2026 Christine Beard マネジメント マネジメント・リーダーシップ リーダーシップ 経済学

  • Before You Decide Who's the Problem, Get the Evidence
    2026/09/21

    A convincing story is not the same thing as a management diagnosis.

    In this episode, Christine looks at what to establish before deciding whether an employee, manager, trainer or process is the problem.

    Useful evidence includes the original expectations, what training actually took place, whether competence was tested, what mistakes occurred, what feedback was given, what the employee said, and what the manager did next.

    There may be an employee problem. There may be a training problem. There may be a process problem. It may be all three.

    The point is to build an audit trail over time so management decisions are based on what actually happened rather than on whichever retrospective account sounds most persuasive.

  • How Do I Run a One-on-One That Actually Develops Someone?
    2026/09/21

    A one-on-one should not be a status update dressed up as development.

    In this episode, Christine explains how to run a one-on-one that leaves the employee thinking more clearly, taking greater ownership and carrying the next commitments — rather than leaving the manager with more work.

    The discipline starts before the meeting with employee pre-work. During the conversation, the manager prepares questions rather than answers, listens properly, allows silence, resists rescuing “I don't know”, and keeps the employee in the driver's seat.

    The conversation should move beyond what happened this week and into capability:

    • What pattern are you seeing?

    • What are you learning?

    • What are you avoiding?

    • What can you do now that you could not do three months ago?

    • What are you committing to next?

    The same rhythm helps with underperformance: use evidence, define the gap, understand the cause, agree the next action and follow up.

    A useful final test is simple: who left driving the taxi?

  • Why Does Everything in My Business Still Depend on Me?
    2026/09/21

    If every important decision, problem or piece of knowledge still has to come through the owner, the business may have grown without becoming less dependent on the owner.

    In this episode, Christine looks at the difference between building a bigger business and building a bigger job for yourself.

    Owner dependency can show up in many ways:

    • every unusual decision needs the owner;

    • customer problems keep escalating upward;

    • important knowledge exists in one person's head;

    • managers cannot act without checking;

    • the business slows down when one person is away;

    • the same problems keep being solved rather than removed.

    The answer is not more heroics.

    Build capability. Share knowledge. Create backups. Clarify authority. Develop managers. Put useful management rhythms in place. And when a recurring problem appears, ask why it needed the same person again.

    A useful test is: if you disappeared for four weeks, what would actually stop?

    That list is a map of organisational dependence.

    Choose one item and make the business less dependent on you for it.
