概要
The Chair in the Unplowed Acre: Who Keeps It Company?

A lone ladder-back chair sat in the center of a two-acre field in Pelham Township on May 14, 2019, legs sunk three inches into soft spring soil and the seat dry, with no footprints around it-so why had a whole community, and a chain of deeds stretching back to 1892, insisted the center two acres be “not to be entered or cultivated”? What, or who, was that chair meant to keep company?

In this episode, we follow the chain of documents and local memories that orbit the Borden Tract, hear how a septic inspector, an archival collector, and a landowner describe the same unplowed field, and consider the odd, repeated legal phrase that never says why the parcel was reserved. Could a margin note and an unrecorded conveyance hide the reason the center was left untouched for over a century?

- The chair was oriented east toward the tree line and sat roughly 400 feet from any structure, road, or fence.
- The chair’s legs had sunk about three inches into the soil while the seat remained dry.
- Chad Miller was a septic and well inspector with 11 years in the township when he photographed the chair.
- The Borden Tract changed hands five times since 1911 with each deed repeating the exclusion: center two acres held in common reservation, not to be cultivated, not to be disturbed.
- Michelle Hicks logged over 40,000 miles collecting primary documents and discovered a private conveyance dated 1892 referenced in the 1911 deed.
