Northern Virginia’s Bunny Man legend is usually told beneath a railroad overpass near Clifton, Virginia: an escaped patient, a killer in rabbit skins, hanging bodies, and a Halloween apparition waiting in the tunnel. But the surviving record points somewhere else.

In October 1970, two disturbing incidents unfolded along Guinea Road in Burke, several miles from the bridge. Air Force Academy cadet Robert Bennett and his fiancée reported that a white-clad figure threw a hatchet through their car window after accusing them of trespassing. Eleven days later, construction security guard Paul Phillips reported confronting an axe-carrying person in a rabbit-like suit at an unfinished house. Phillips said the stranger damaged a wooden post, threatened him, and disappeared into nearby woods before police arrived.

A Fairfax County police file confirms the second investigation, the property damage, a possible telephone lead from someone calling himself the “Axe Man,” and a failed effort to identify the offender. Yet no arrest followed. Meanwhile, schoolyard stories multiplied, the tale moved to an unrelated bridge, and later retellings added an asylum, escaped inmates, massacres, and ghosts that historical research could not verify.
