  • Strumming for Life: Stroke Recovery Through Music | Charlie Webber
    2026/09/12

After a massive stroke affected the entire right side of his body, Charlie Webber was told he might never walk normally, speak normally, or play guitar again. For a lifelong musician, the prognosis reached into the center of his identity.

In Season 2, Episode 17 of The Broken Road Project Podcast, host Trent Peterson sits down with Charles “Charlie” Webber—a retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, guitarist, author, and stroke warrior—to talk about faith, family, individualized therapy, and rebuilding one chord at a time.

Charlie could not physically or emotionally touch a guitar for a full year. Then he asked his wife, Lisa, to bring him a small guitar and began again with a few basic chords. That first attempt became his “declaration of independence” and grew into more than 240 weeks of documenting recovery for other stroke warriors.

Charlie shares the isolation of suffering a stroke during COVID-era visitor restrictions, the moment seeing Lisa again felt like a burst of light, the therapists who learned what mattered to him, and the church that held his seat in the praise band for two years while believing he would return.

His recovery journey also became the book Strumming for Life: Riffs of Resilience, a Stroke Warrior’s Fight Back Through Music! Built from years of journaling and weekly videos, the book encourages survivors to hold on to faith, hope, support, and the willingness to learn a new way forward.

In this episode: • Charlie’s life of military service and music before stroke • Touring with the Air Force’s Tops in Blue • The day the stroke changed everything • Isolation, Lisa’s support, and the emotional side of recovery • Grieving old abilities without surrendering hope • Picking up the guitar after one full year • Therapy designed around Charlie’s musical goals • Returning to the church praise band • More than 240 weeks of documenting recovery • How journaling became Strumming for Life • Charlie’s message to survivors and caregivers

Charlie says he no longer plays simply to impress—he plays to express. His story reminds us that a difficult prognosis does not get the final word.

  • Still Here Together | Cisco and Melissa | The Broken Road Project Podcast | Season2 Episode 16
    2026/08/22
Cisco Gonzalez was 44 when an ischemic stroke changed life for his entire family. In S2E16 of The Broken Road Project Podcast, Cisco and his wife, Melissa Gonzalez, share both sides of a recovery story—the survivor trying to understand what happened and the caregiver suddenly forced to make decisions, advocate, protect her family, and keep moving forward. Cisco remembers very little of the weeks that followed his stroke. Melissa remembers almost all of it. Their journey included frightening symptoms, uncertainty, an ICU fall, a serious brain bleed, an emergency craniotomy, weeks of hospitalization, memory loss, vision and balance problems, and the long process of relearning things most of us never think twice about. But this conversation isn't only about what they lost. Cisco and Melissa talk honestly about rehabilitation, marriage, family, prayer, caregiver isolation, finding the right support, and how their faith grew through one of the hardest seasons of their lives. In this episode: • Cisco's life before his stroke at 44 • The first symptoms Melissa noticed • The survivor and caregiver perspectives of the same medical crisis • Why having an advocate matters • Cisco's ICU complications and emergency craniotomy • Memory loss, vision problems, balance, and rehabilitation • The small victories that become enormous during recovery • Why recovery should never become a competition • The emotional weight carried by caregivers • Faith when the future is uncertain • How their marriage, family, and purpose changed • Why Cisco and Melissa are now helping further the mission of the Broken Road Project One of Cisco's most important messages to other survivors is simple: don't compare your recovery to someone else's. Every survivor's road is different. Let someone else's progress inspire you—not define you. And from Melissa comes an equally important reminder for caregivers: there are parts of this road that can feel incredibly lonely. Community matters. Support matters. Faith matters. No survivor or caregiver should have to walk the broken road alone. 🎙️ THE BROKEN ROAD PROJECT Website: https://www.thebrokenroad.org All BRP links: https://linktr.ee/thebrokenroadproject YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheBrokenRoadProjectPodcast Podbean: https://thebrokenroadpodcast.podbean.com/ Instagram: @thebrokenroadprojectofficial FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572382964940 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebrokenroadproject ☕ FOLLOW CISCO & MELISSA Need More Coffee Please: https://needmorecoffeeplease.com/ Their existing S2E16 guest spotlight also links to their book, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. • More Than A Diagnosis | Necole McDaniel | The Broken Road Project | Season 2 Episode 15
    2026/08/08

After 32 years in nursing, Necole McDaniel found herself on the patient side of healthcare.

In Season 2, Episode 15, Necole McDaniel, BSN, RN, TCRN, CEN, joins Trent Peterson for a candid conversation about medical gaslighting, chronic illness, patient advocacy, nursing burnout, fear, family, community, and the choice to live beyond a diagnosis.

Necole shares how being a patient changed the way she sees bedside care; why invisible illness and a polished appearance can delay recognition; and how documenting symptoms, building a medical binder, bringing support to appointments, and asking clear questions can help patients participate more fully in their care.

She also speaks openly about her lived experience with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, gastroparesis, total parenteral nutrition, recurrent anaphylaxis, chronic pain, and the emotional weight of an uncertain future.

Through it all, Necole returns to a central truth: illness may change parts of your life, but it does not get to become your whole identity.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • What burnout can look like in nursing and caregiving • What being a patient taught a career nurse • Medical gaslighting, invisible illness, and delayed answers • Practical ways to organize medical records and prepare for appointments • Living with risk without allowing fear to control your life • Why recovery plateaus can be places to rest—not places to stop • The importance of caregiver support, community, dignity, and being seen • Why an invitation still matters, even when someone cannot attend • Holding on to your identity beyond illness

Necole appears in her personal capacity and speaks only for herself.

This podcast is provided for education and personal storytelling only. It is not medical advice. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional about your own symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, medications, or care decisions.

CONTENT NOTE: This episode includes discussion of severe illness, anaphylaxis, chronic pain, hospitalization, malnutrition, medical trauma, workplace violence, infant loss, and a brief account of emotional crisis and asking for help.
