The Brain’s Body Podcast (presented by Brain Talk Books) is an audio companion to Dr. Christopher K. Slaton’s Education and Science series and related titles. Using human systems science—the study of brain, body, and sense events—each episode explores “brain–body–sense experience” and the everyday message behind behavior. Grounded in Dr. Slaton’s signature framework—“The brain is the body” and “The Brain’s Body is a Learning System”—the podcast connects what happens in the body to how we live, learn, think, and respond.

Across home, school, neighborhood, and workplace networks, the show focuses on practical ways to support children, families, and professionals—especially when information processing is stressed and a parent or child is in crisis. Episodes include case discussions and listener-driven questions that model Dr. Slaton’s approach: talk to the child’s brain, not the child’s body. From big feelings and conflict to the crisis of self, listeners leave with simple language, reflection prompts, and next-step tools for improving learning, participation, and self-awareness.

Brain Talk Books is a publishing imprint of Progressive Investment Group Press established to disseminate Christopher K. Slaton’s literature in Human Systems Science, with particular attention to brain–body–sense events and their implications for learning, self-regulation, and relational dynamics. Across books and companion media, the imprint advances a structured, practice-oriented framework for interpreting behavioral communication and for supporting parents, educators, and health and human service professionals in applied settings.

  • Brain Thinking and the Crisis of Self: How the Brain Learns with the Body

You can’t outthink the signals your body is already sending. This episode examines the uncomfortable question Dr. Christopher K. Slaton keeps asking: Are you really thinking when you think you’re thinking, or are you reacting through a script learned long ago? The discussion approaches the brain–body connection as an information-flow problem rather than a personality problem. When emotion disrupts the transfer of information between the brain and body, the physical self can become louder than the internal neural self. Self-talk takes over, awareness collapses, and the person may stop receiving what the senses are reporting. This disruption contributes to the Crisis of Self: the separation between what a person receives internally, understands through lived experience, and expresses externally. The episode also introduces the Human Systems Science framework behind Dr. Slaton’s upcoming book and the three variables that work together: Sense, Feel, Focus. The pause creates the space needed to receive and organize information so a person can respond with clarity rather than defaulting to prediction, defense, shutdown, or immediate reaction. If you want to better understand self-awareness, reflection, and decision-making in everyday relationships, this episode is for you. Subscribe, share this episode with someone who wants to better understand reaction and response, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway: When do you notice yourself reacting instead of responding?

My Sons Contributions to Human Systems Science: Reflective Storytelling.

A schizophrenia diagnosis can leave you staring at a question that feels both personal and scientific: what exactly changed in the experience of self? We start there, with the moment our understanding of communication, response, and care suddenly stops fitting the reality in front of us. From that rupture, we follow a clear thread, how information moves through the brain, the body, and the senses as lived experience. We lay out Part One of Human Systems Science for Self-Learning, a communication model that treats brain-body-sense activity as one connected system. Instead of reducing communication to language, we look at how sensory events become bodily responses, how the nervous system organizes meaning, and how signals move forward and backward through feedback loops that shape self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-actualization. To make the model concrete, we borrow structure from Shannon’s communication theory, then expand it to include the lived, human layers: memory, emotion, thought, regulation, and the ongoing reorganization of identity. We also name the “crisis of self” that can emerge when environmental stimuli and neurological responses become misaligned. Using the lens of physics and neurophysics of self, we explore how perception and bodily regulation influence identity and communication, especially when the system is under strain. We close by pointing toward Brain Talk as a public practice that helps listeners recognize these patterns in real time. If this way of thinking helps you put words to your own experience, subscribe, share this episode with someone who cares about Self-Learning and Human Systems Science, and leave a review so more people can find the conversation.

  • The Crisis of Self: How the Sense Path Shapes Thought and Change
    2026/09/08

You can be in the crisis of self and not recognize it — not because you are unaware, but because the flow of information gets blocked before it becomes reflection. In this Brain Talk episode, we slow that process down and look at how the sense path shapes thought, change, and the choices you make when discomfort enters the body.

Human Systems Science gives us a way to study how information moves through internal and external contact. What you sense is not separate from how you feel, remember, think, or respond. The sense path becomes the starting point for recognizing whether you are blocking the flow of experience or staying present long enough to become more informed and aware through reflection.

We explore how emotion can interrupt memory, how discomfort can shape body response, and how reflective storytelling helps you notice the way you receive information before it becomes thought. Through the receive path, we look at how brain, body, and sense messaging connect to neural response, discipline, focus, and the ability to respond with greater awareness.

This episode also breaks down emotional signals with clarity: anger as a sign of discomfort, fear as resistance, anxiety as confusion between what the body is trained to do and what the brain is not prepared to do, and hurt, pain, or sadness as signs the body may act through. These signals reveal how the body carries states of mind that can distort the brain and body connection.

This framing continues the Brain Talk storyline connected to the release of two new Brain Talk books. In this storyline, Human Systems Science becomes a way to assess how you participate in the flow of information, discomfort, reflection, and response.

As you read and listen, ask yourself: where do you block the flow, where do you feel discomfort, and what becomes possible when you use reflection to become more informed, aware, and intentional in how you respond?

Subscribe for more Brain Talk, share this with someone navigating a tough season, and leave a review with one place you notice yourself blocking the flow. What did this bring up for you?
