What is the Book of Malachi about, and why is it the final book of the Old Testament?

In this Sunday School lesson, we examine the historical setting, purpose, message, and structure of the Book of Malachi. Written after the Babylonian exile during the period of Ezra and Nehemiah, Malachi addresses a people who had returned to the Promised Land but had once again fallen into spiritual complacency and covenant unfaithfulness.

Why were the priests offering corrupt worship? Why were God's people giving blemished sacrifices? What does Malachi teach about false teaching, marriage and divorce, foreign wives, tithing, judgment, and the Day of the Lord?

Understanding Malachi begins with understanding when it was written, who it was written to, and what was happening in Israel at the time. This lesson places Malachi within the larger storyline of the Old Testament—from the exile and return to the rebuilding of the temple and the ministries of Ezra and Nehemiah.
