The story of Jesus’ birth is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible—but familiarity can sometimes cause us to miss just how incredible it really is.

In Episode 10 of Remember Who The King Is, Chad Muncy, Donnie Prince, and Mark Berry return to the Gospel of Matthew and walk through Matthew 1:18–25, looking beyond the traditional Christmas story to consider what Mary and Joseph were actually facing.

Mary was pregnant before their marriage—and Joseph knew the child wasn’t his.

Before Joseph understood what God was doing, he faced heartbreak, confusion, fear, and a decision that could change both of their lives. Yet even with incomplete information, Scripture describes Joseph as a righteous man who chose compassion rather than public humiliation.

Then everything changed.

An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him:

“Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife…”

The child Mary carried had been conceived by the Holy Spirit. His name would be Jesus, and He would save His people from their sins.

Suddenly, Joseph wasn’t simply preparing to become a husband.

He was being asked to help raise the Messiah.

Joseph didn’t have every answer.

He couldn't see everything that was coming.

He simply knew what God had told him—and he obeyed.

The birth of Jesus reminds us that God’s plans often unfold in ways we never would have chosen or expected. Mary and Joseph were real people with real plans, real fears, and real questions. Yet when God called them into something far greater than themselves, they said yes.

And God still calls ordinary people to trust Him today.

Maybe God has placed an idea on your heart.

Maybe there’s something you know you need to do.

Maybe fear of failure, uncertainty, or what other people will think has kept you from taking the first step.

You don’t have to understand the entire plan before you obey the next thing God has asked you to do.
