Dr. Noah Kaufman remembers COVID from a place few people experienced firsthand: inside emergency departments scattered across the country, where answers were scarce, colleagues were getting sick, patients were dying, and physicians were expected to keep showing up anyway. He recalls flying nearly empty planes as an essential worker, caring for overwhelming numbers of patients with depleted staff, wrestling with the uncertainty surrounding a new disease and new vaccines, and the night he couldn't save a father whose teenage son turned his grief toward Noah. Years later, Kaufman looks back at what it meant to practice medicine when even the doctors didn't know what came next, and why he believes COVID permanently changed emergency medicine, the physician-patient relationship, and his own willingness to say three words physicians aren't always comfortable saying: “I don't know.”
