Most people think a veterinarian’s world starts and ends with dogs, cats, and vaccines. We see something much bigger, and it changes how you understand emergency veterinary medicine when your pet needs help fast. Julie Schwenzer sits down with Dr. Mike LoSasso, Chief of Staff at Frisco Emergency Pet Care, to unpack the real scope of the profession and the very personal path that led him to the pet ER.

We talk about the surprising places veterinarians work, including safeguarding the national food supply, supporting large animal and food animal operations, and even consulting with aquaculture and apiaries. Dr. LoSasso shares how he once planned to focus on horses, how family and geography kept him in North Texas, and why a decade in small animal general practice taught him both the value of prevention and the grind of repeating the same heartworm, flea, vaccine, and behavior conversations all day.

Then we shift into what makes 24/7 emergency and critical care different. People don’t come to the ER because they’re “due” for something, they come because they’re scared and they need answers now. We get honest about the hardest moments, including guiding families through euthanasia decisions, and why doing that gently and correctly can be one of the most meaningful parts of the job. We also share a behind-the-scenes reminder that learning never stops, sometimes it’s as specific as figuring out how to draw blood from a bird.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like inside a pet ER in Frisco and North Dallas, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a fellow pet owner, and leave a review so more families can find trustworthy emergency vet guidance.
