Today I try to sell you the worst product in the world, and explain the puzzle at the heart of this show: why anyone would choose expensive, slow, limited, and fragile photography in an age of free, instant, and perfect. My answer is not despite all that. It's because of it. There's a word for everything in that sales pitch: friction. And friction is not the price of the joy. Friction is the source of it.

Four honest pitches. Cost teaches value: the moment a frame costs something, a question appears that free photography never asks, is this worth it, and that question is attention itself. Limit teaches choice: infinity never made anyone an artist; the roll is a sonnet, thirty-six lines, use them well. The wait teaches presence: film spreads one photograph across three separate joys. And failure teaches acceptance: life is the original no-undo system, and every ruined roll is not a tax but tuition. If you're listening without a camera, the same law holds for looking: what an image costs you is what it weighs afterwards.

Convenience optimizes what you produce. Friction develops who you are. Easy was never what we were shopping for.
