Churches can feel sturdy right up until something underneath finally gives way. That tension is exactly why we return to Acts 20, where Paul gathers the Ephesian elders for a last, unfiltered set of words about what the Church of Jesus Christ is meant to be and how it stays healthy over time.

We read Paul’s charge closely and pull out two essential marks of an authentic church. First, the church appoints godly leaders. The New Testament uses overlapping terms like elders, overseers, pastors, and shepherds because the core task is spiritual care: guarding the flock, teaching God’s Word, and watching for threats that harm people from the inside out. We also talk through why character matters more than talent, and how passages like 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 shape a biblical view of church leadership.

Second, we confront the heart-level question: who is the church for? Paul’s ministry is centered on serving Jesus “with all humility and tears,” and that pushes us to examine our own motives, agendas, and attitudes. We connect Acts 20 with key themes from Philippians 2, Colossians 3, and the call to “help the weak,” building a church culture marked by compassion, forgiveness, unity, and generosity. We also keep the mission in view: Jesus came to seek and save the lost, so a gospel church cannot drift from evangelism and the good news of grace.
