Anxious. Avoidant. Secure. Disorganized.
Congratulations! You've spent seven minutes on TikTok, and now you've diagnosed yourself, your ex, and that person who left you on read three weeks ago.
Attachment theory has become one of the internet's favorite ways to explain relationships. And while there's real psychology behind it, somewhere along the way, we started treating attachment styles like personality types, relationship horoscopes, and convenient explanations for why people behave like assholes.
In Episode 6 of High Frequency, Low Noise, we're digging into the actual science behind attachment theory, how our early relationships can influence the way we connect with others, and what happens when useful psychological frameworks become limiting labels.
We're talking childhood experiences, relationship patterns, emotional availability, and the difference between understanding someone's behavior and excusing it.
Because attachment theory can help us recognize patterns, but it can't tell us everything about a person. And knowing someone's attachment style doesn't mean we know their intentions, their capacity for growth, or whether they're right for us.
So, are we using psychology to better understand ourselves and each other? Or are we just getting really good at diagnosing people we haven't actually taken the time to understand?
Maybe the goal isn't to figure out which attachment style everyone has. Maybe it's to get a little better at actually attaching.
